Watch Jerry Lawson and Talk of The Town – Sing Off Episode 4 Video - Last week, The Sing-Off had its first early upset when the Whiffenpoofs, the fancy singers from Yale, got sent home. From a reality TV standpoint, their departure left the show without a villain, without the deserving yet somehow unlikeable competitors who keep things interesting. Now, there are six generally likeable groups. Some of them have better back-stories than others (like Street Corner Symphony and their Southern humility, Jerry Lawson and his historic a cappella career, Committed and their recent transition into secular music from gospel), but no one really stands out as the antagonists.
As soon as the first episode of "The Sing-Off" aired, much of the debate here was about whether or not an R&B legend like Jerry Lawson should even be on the show. Is he the most talented singer? He's certainly up there, but he also has a bit of an unfair advantage due to his experience.
Nevertheless, he's there -- and his group Jerry Lawson & Talk of the Town has the potential to go all the way. With Groove For Thought leaving Monday night, the real contenders have to be this group and Committed to make it all the way to the finale.
As for the episode as a whole, there were some nice moments. They groups each tackled a rock classic, and then also sang a "guilty pleasure" number. For Jerry Lawson, the highlight was easily a take on the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" that managed to do something different with the song while at the same time entertaining. Meanwhile, Committed recovered from a subpar earlier performance to deliver a thrilling cover of the Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way" that caused host Nick Lachey to make a joke about 98 Degrees.
